When Hellen’s parents died, she went to live with her grandmother in rural Homa Bay County. There was no steady income. School fees felt impossible. The future felt fragile.
She remembers:
“After my parents died, I did not know what my future would be. My grandmother didn’t know how she would be able to send me to school.”
Four years ago, Hellen enrolled at Achungo’s Imbo campus.
For the first time, she had daily meals, consistent instruction, textbooks, structured study time, and teachers who believed in her. She was no longer sent home for unpaid fees. She could focus.
Upper primary students at Achungo rise early and participate in extended study sessions as they prepare for Kenya’s national primary exam — the test that determines access to high school. Hellen embraced the challenge.
She passed.
In a region where many students never advance beyond primary school, Hellen is now in high school — one of more than 200 Achungo graduates continuing their education.
Her story is not unusual at Achungo.
It is what happens when a child is given stability and belief.
