Education that breaks the cycle of poverty

When children are safe, nourished, and supported, they can learn. And when they learn, their future changes.

Education that breaks the cycle of poverty

When children are safe, nourished, and supported, they can learn. And when they learn, their future changes.

The Challenge
We Address

When basic needs are uncertain, education is fragile.
In rural Homa Bay County, many children face poverty, food insecurity, and limited access to quality schools.

We provide meals, clean water, structured learning, and mentorship, creating the stability children need to succeed.

Stories of Change

“After my parents died, I did not know what my future would be. My grandmother didn’t know how she would be able to send me to school.”Helen

Our Programs

From classrooms to life-changing opportunities, our programs support students at every stage of their journey. We provide education, mentorship, and experiences that open doors to a brighter future.

Primary Education

Achungo operates two primary campuses, in Rodi and Imbo, serving children from preprimary through sixth grade.

Both campuses share the same leadership, academic standards, and mission. Imbo was built to expand access, allowing Achungo to serve more children in surrounding rural communities.

Each campus includes classrooms, libraries, computer labs, kitchens, assembly halls, and dormitories for upper primary students preparing for national exams.

Students rise early to study. Teachers mentor closely. Expectations are high. The result is both academic excellence and remarkable discipline — without harsh enforcement. Achungo is now recognized as one of the top-performing schools in Homa Bay county.

Junior Secondary
(Imbo)

With Kenya’s shift to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), Achungo expanded its programs to include a junior secondary school (Grades 7–9).

To ensure continuity, Achungo built a junior secondary campus in Imbo, complete with classrooms, a science lab, faculty housing, and dormitories.

This allows students to continue their education in a stable, structured environment, protecting the gains made in primary school and strengthening long-term outcomes.

Secondary School Scholarships & Support

Passing primary exams is only the beginning. Secondary school requires tuition, boarding fees, uniforms, and supplies — costs that many families in Homa Bay County simply cannot afford.

Achungo works to ensure that every qualifying graduate can continue.

We provide scholarships, sponsorship coordination, mentorship, and ongoing support. Currently, over 240 Achungo graduates are enrolled in secondary schools.
For these students, high school is not simply academic progression, it is the path to economic transformation.

Post-Secondary: The Long View

Our commitment does not end at high school graduation. While we do not formally fund all university education, we remain connected to our graduates.

Many return to visit. Some mentor younger students. Others pursue professional careers and begin giving back.

Our long-term vision is generational:

Students who were supported become professionals. Professionals become mentors.
Mentors strengthen the next generation. The cycle begins to reverse.
